Am I just a motivator? Lack of respect towards my staff

Gianmarco Pozzecco, coach of Italbasket and fresh from his first success as a EuroLeague coach with Asvel, was a guest on Area 52. Among the various topics, also the concept of motivator: «(Among the motivators) Carlo Ancelotti in my opinion is clearly the best coach there is in the world of football, together perhaps with Guardiola. But clearly it is blasphemy, because I absolutely do not want to compare myself to Carletto Ancelotti.”

«I am a motivator, which can be something justified in some ways, if one clearly knew my way of coaching. I’m happy to be portrayed as a motivator, but does the person who portrays me as a motivator know what I do on the pick and roll? What has basically been the way my teams have been defending for a couple of years now? What do we do on the pick and roll with the classic 5? What do we do with the 4? What do we do when the pick and roll involves two guards? And then maybe what does he do in attack? Why do you often give the ball to the low post? I mean, I’ve never had anyone ask me why I do a stunt. Basically there is this certainty that I am a motivator. Not that I mind being one, for heaven’s sake.”

«I see it as an extremely positive thing. I love possibly considering myself a motivator because it means having empathy, being empathetic, having emotional intelligence… in short, having characteristics that I would like to have but then on the field it is not enough. The players have to make some choices on the pitch.”

«It’s not that it bothers me, it’s not the right term. It’s something that doesn’t make me feel good and I find it a lack of respect towards my staff. A staff of the highest level, a sensational staff.”
