According to various German media, Anwar El Ghazi has gone to court to challenge his dismissal by Mainz 05. The Dutch striker’s contract was recently terminated by the German club due to his pro-Palestinian Instagram posts.

El Ghazi will according to BILD in general newspaper are assisted by the German labor and sports lawyer Alexander Bergweiler. He had previously expressed doubts about whether the dismissal without notice was legal.

Initially, 28-year-old El Ghazi was suspended after his statement of support for the Palestinians. The two-time Dutch international was given a new chance, but subsequently did not agree with the club’s statement.

The German club stated that El Ghazi had shown remorse. The former Ajax and PSV player refuted this in a new message on social media. Mainz then decided to finally say goodbye to the attacker, who still had a contract until the summer of 2025.

Due to the sudden departure from Mainz, El Ghazi may have a problem, because FIFA regulations state that players are allowed to play for a maximum of two clubs in one season in most parts of the world. At the start of the season he already made two appearances for PSV.

That is why the attacker must hope for dispensation from FIFA. Otherwise, he may be on the sidelines for eight months until he can start working at a possible new club. The lawsuit is expected to take place this calendar year.
