Baskonia overcomes its losses and comes back in the Astroballe

Triumph of the Vitorian team (81-88) in their visit to ASVEL Villeurbanne

MADRID, 17 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Baskonia won this Friday by a tight 81-88 on its visit to ASVEL Villeurbanne, during matchday 9 of the Regular Phase of the Euroleague, and thus extended its rebirth with Dusko Ivanovic on the bench, also solving his important absences due to a process last minute flu.

The Lithuanian forward Tadas Sedekerskis, one of the most prominent in the recent commitments of the Baskonista squad, joined ‘in extremis’ to the list of casualties due to that flu, which had already prevented the Serbian guard Vanja Marinkovic from traveling to Lyon with the other players.

Without the injured Khalifa Diop and Nikos Rogkavopoulos, the Vitorian team only had nine players available for Dusko Ivanovic’s plans; and one of them was the Italian point guard Nico Mannion, without enough shooting due to having physical problems.

To make matters worse, ASVEL Villeurbanne started with a bang from the triple line, making a 4/4 that contrasted with the visitor’s 2/9. In that context, American power forward Mike Scott emerged as the biggest local threat in a great first quarter for his interests (30-20).

Scott himself made it 39-23 on the Astroballe scoreboard and his teammate John Egbunu maintained the succulent lead (41-25), but it was then that Markus Howard once again rescued Baskonia. Thanks to his efforts, Ivanovic’s pupils gradually reduced the gap and reached the break with a hopeful 49-42.

Similarly, the Nigerian power forward Chima Moneke and the American center – with an Ivorian passport – Matt Costello had entered the fray. The expertise of both was combined with two consecutive triples from Howard to get closer (54-48) and make the local parish nervous, as evidenced later by the expulsion of Gianmarco Pozzecco.

EXPULSION OF POZZECCO AND BASKONISTA’S COME BACK

ASVEL’s Italian coach, usually histrionic, went to the locker room for his continued protest against referee Dragan Porobic when he asked for a play to be reviewed. There was 1:11 left to end the third period and Baskonia had already come back (65-66), and even increased its lead with a triple by Dani Díez on the last possession (65-73).

However, the Lyon team chose not to panic and warned of this with a triple from Scott and another from Timothé Luwawu-Cabarrot. Using free throws, Howard cut off that first reaction from the French team (71-76) and later it was Moneke, with a three-point basket, who did the same (76-79) in another rival rally.

An applauded 2+1 action by Joffrey Lauvergne tied the score at 79-79 with 3:47 left to play. But the Baskonistas skillfully handled the final moments, shone in defense and put the finishing touch with a three-pointer. Of course, Howard had scored it from a corner (79-83) to round off a colossal performance.

More free throws from Costello and a block from Moneke sealed the definitive victory by +7 for the visiting team, which remains in the group of playoff contenders with a balance of 5-4. For its part, ASVEL continues very low in the table with a balance of 2-7.
