Belgian Women’s National Team Makes History with Largest Victory

With a gap of 108 points, this is the largest victory in the history of the Belgian women’s national team.

The European champions, sixth in the world rankings, were keen to redeem themselves after their surprise defeat against Poland 62-67 on Wednesday. Without Julie Allemand, spared, and with Habibatou Bah in place of Elise Ramette, the Belgians started strong, facing an unclassified team, which is competing in the Euro qualifiers for the first time and which was reforming a national team for the first time in 7 years: the score was 6-25 after the first quarter. The Cats led 10-63, with Emma Meesseman shooting 11/11 in the first period.

The third quarter ended 16-102. The gap reached 100 points with 3:56 remaining, after a layup by Antonia Delaere. The match ended 28-136, a new record for the national team. On May 22, 1995, Belgium beat Scotland 122-28 in qualifying for Euro 1997 in Namur.
