Bundesliga Clubs Bid Farewell to DFB Cup as Hertha BSC, Eintracht Frankfurt, and 1. FC Nürnberg Secure Victories

Early on Wednesday evening, SC Freiburg was knocked out of the DFB Cup against Paderborn. In the late games, other Bundesliga clubs said goodbye to the competition.

Hertha BSC – FSV Mainz 05 3:0

3-0! Hertha knocks Mainz out of the cup and can celebrate. On the other hand, Mainz are facing troubled days with coach Bo Svensson…

In the Bundesliga, the 05ers had three draws and six defeats in nine games. The only competitive win of the season was the success in the first cup round against Elversberg. Now Mainz will also go bankrupt in the cup. Does Svensson have to take his hat off now? Mainz sports director Martin Schmidt said: “Bo will be on the bench on Saturday if we can steer the analysis in the right direction.”

Two converted penalties make the Hertha fans celebrate. After Leitsch fouls Niederlechner, referee Jöllenbeck decides on a penalty. Reese safely sinks the penalty to make it 1-0 (45th + 2). Berlin’s top scorer Tabakovic, who missed the last penalty in Kiel, lets Reese get the ball from the spot this time.

But the striker showed that Tabakovic can still take penalties in the 50th minute when he hammered a hand penalty into the box: 2-0!

Then the Berliners score without a penalty: Tabakovic heads in to make it 3-0 (61st).

In the last league game against Paderborn (3:1), Reese (two assists) and Tabakovic (2 goals) were the Berlin dream couple.

A very important success for the Berliners! Hertha received 862,400 from the DFB for reaching the round of 16. Money that cash-strapped Berliners urgently need.

Viktoria Cologne – Eintracht Frankfurt 0:2

Favorite victory in Cologne. However: Eintracht Frankfurt is shaking its way into the next round with a 2-0 win against Viktoria.

After 14 minutes, Hessen made it 1-0 against the third division team through Skhiri (14th). There were no further hits in the first half.

And even after the break there isn’t much going on at Eintracht. At least: Knauff can still make it 2-0 for Frankfurt (90th).

1. FC Nürnberg – Hansa Rostock 3:2 nV

A wild football game with a happy Nuremberg victory.

After a goalless first half, Hansa took a 1-0 lead in the duel between the second division teams thanks to a goal from Brumado (58th). The answer comes straight away: Okunuki equalizes the club at 1-1 (63′).

Kinsombi puts Hansa in the lead again, 2-1 (74th). But it’s still not a victory: in stoppage time, Lohkemper makes it 2-2 (90th + 5th).

The game goes into overtime. And then Lohkemper brings Nuremberg ahead for the first time with a score of 3-2 (99th). Nuremberg turned the game around and maintained their lead in the hectic final phase. Uzun even hits a penalty far over the box because his supporting leg slips away. Doesn’t matter anymore. The rest is cheers from Nuremberg!
