Chia-Wooi Yik Struggle at China Masters Super 750, Looking to Rebound at World Tour Finals

KUALA LUMPUR: World No. 2 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik will need to step up their game if they hope to finish the season on a high note at the World Tour Finals in Hangzhou next month.

This follows their early elimination for the second consecutive week, this time at the China Masters Super 750 in Shenzhen.

In the last 16 on Thursday, they faced China’s new pair, Ren Xiang Yu-He Ji Ting and were defeated 27-25, 18-21, 21-17.

Xiang Yu-Ji Ting, in only their sixth tournament together since being paired up early last month, demonstrated that they are a significant threat that their competitors cannot underestimate.

The world No. 50 showed that their Kumamoto Masters Japan Super 500 triumph last week was no fluke.

Despite having defeated Xiang Yu-Ji Ting at the French Open, Aaron-Wooi Yik admitted that their opponents outperformed them on this occasion.

“They played really well…the speed and everything else, they were in control against us,” said Aaron.

“We didn’t perform well in this tournament. Hopefully, we can recover and be better prepared for Hangzhou.”

Unfortunately, Aaron-Wooi Yik couldn’t quite build on the momentum since their Denmark Open victory, which marked their first World Tour title.

They faced disappointment last week as well, exiting in the last 16 in Japan.

Malaysia’s other representatives, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun and Goh Jin Wei, were also knocked out on Thursday.

Wei Chong-Kai Wun put up a commendable performance but lost 17-21, 21-11, 21-13 to world No. 8 Ou Xuan Yi-Liu Yu Chen.

Jin Wei missed an opportunity to extend the match to a third game, squandering an 11-4 lead in the second game and ultimately losing 21-9, 21-16 to reigning Olympic champion Chen Yu Fei.
