Cibao-North Zone Takes the Lead in Medal Table at X Barahona 2023 National Sports School Games

BARAHONA. The Cibao-North Zone leads the medal table of the X Barahona 2023 National Sports School Games after the first medals were awarded this Wednesday in the disciplines of karate, gymnastics and badminton.

In second place is the Metropolitan Zone, with 10 medals (four gold, two silver and four bronze), while the Metropolitan II representation is third, with 10 metals (three gold, one silver and six bronze).

Higuamo, with three gold medals, one silver and three bronze medals, occupies fourth place overall, with seven medals, and Cibao Sur is in fifth position, with two gold medals, three silver and five bronze medals ( 10), and El Valla is sixth, with six metals, including two silver and four bronze.

Seventh place is occupied by the Northeast, with two silver and three bronze medals, while the eighth place belongs to the Southwest, with one silver and one bronze. The Northwest has not yet entered the general medal table.

Cibao Sur (La Vega), first place gymnastics School Games

Cibao Sur (La Vega) was crowned champion of the artistic gymnastics tournament of the X School Games held in this city, organized by the National Institute of Physical Education (Inefi).

Second place went to Cibao Norte, which achieved 55.11 points, and third place went to the Metropolitana 2 team, which obtained a score of 54.76 points.

The artistic gymnastics tournament and the karate tournament delivered the first medals of the multi-sports contest, which takes place in Barahona, as the main venue, and in San Juan de la Maguana, Bahoruco and Azua as sub-venues.

The San Francisco de Macorís team, with 54.4 points, occupied the fourth place, while the Southwest was in fifth place, with 52.74 points.

Cibao Norte conquers karate

SAN JUAN DE LA MAGUANA.- The Cibao Norte representation conquered the karate discipline, which culminated this Wednesday, corresponding to the celebration of the X Barahona 2023 National Sports School Games.

The Cibao North Zone added five gold medals, four silver and four bronze, for a total of 13 points, in the competitions held at the Ramón Américo Pasián sports center of the San Juan de la Maguana Sports Complex.

In the second step was the Metropolitan Zone I, with five gold, one silver and five bronze medals, for a total of 11 points; while the Higüamo Zone, with five points, was placed in third place, after winning three golds, one silver and one bronze.

In fourth place came Metropolitan Zone II, achieving seven points with one gold and six bronzes; and in fifth place, the Cibao Sur region, with eight points, the product of three silver and five bronze metals.

Kumite individual

In the men’s individual kumite category, the gold medal in the -76 kilograms was won by 16-year-old Kelvin Madera, from the Cibao Norte Zone, who beat Jeremy Candelario, from Cibao Sur, winner of the silver.

Madera, a native of Gurabo in Santiago, expressed that “it was a difficult fight and I worked hard to beat my rival, who gave me a quality fight.” “My people, let them celebrate.”

The bronze went to Fernando Hernández and Luis Ventura, from the Metropolitan I and Northeast zones, respectively.

In the women’s -66 kilos, Disneiry García, from the Higüamo Zone, won the gold medal before Lleska Familia, from the El Valle Zone, won the silver; and the bronze went to Charmerlin Redman, from Cibao Norte, and Mayerlin Reyes, from Metropolitan Zone II.

García, 16 years old and originally from Higüey, in the province of La Altagracia, highlighted that “today (Wednesday) I enjoy this gold medal thanks to my previous preparation coordinated by my coaches Raúl Sosa and Yesenia Pérez.”

“There is an excellent setup in these School Games,” exclaimed the karate fighter García.

In the men’s plus 76 kilograms, Ángel Brito, from the Higüamo Zone, won the gold medal; about the silver winner, Limberling Cabrera, from the Northeast region; and the bronze went to Leodarly González, from the Northern region, and Junior Peña, from Metropolitan Zone I.

In the women’s plus 66 kilos, the gold went to Dawandy Beltrán, from Metropolitan Zone I, with silver to Madeline Payamps, from the Cibao Norte region; and the bronze was won by Elianna Severino, from Metropolitan Zone II, and Alicia García, from the El Valle region.

Kumite team mode

The Metropolitan Zone II won the gold medal in the men’s team kumite modality, while the silver went to the North region, and the bronze was shared by the Cibao Sur and Metropolitan II regions.

Likewise, they took top honors in the women’s kumite modality, with second place for the Cibao Sur region, and bronze for the Cibao Norte and El Valle regions.

Southwest wins in women’s handball

The Southwest region was successful in the women’s handball competitions of the X Barahona 2023 National Sports School Games that will take place until the 17th of this month in the sub-venues of San Juan de la Maguana, Azua and Bahoruco.

The Southwest beat the Metropolitan Zone 18-8 with four goals from Andry Nova and Yadriela Medrano, while Charmín Rodríguez scored five goals for the defeated team.

In addition, there was a tie in the morning session of the women’s branch this Friday between the Cibao Nordeste and El Valle regions, 17-17, in a match played on the municipal handball court of the San Juan de la Maguana Sports Complex.

For Northeast, Juana Solano scored six goals and Karen Veras four, and for El Valle, Yulianna Valera six and Ivanna Perdomo five goals.

In women’s basketball, which is held at the Barahona Sports Complex, the Southwest team defeated Cibao Nordeste 60-5 this Wednesday in the X National School Sports Games on the second day of the group stage.
