I was planning to become a health and physical education teacher at my alma mater, Kochi High School, but unfortunately there were no openings. In the fall of his fourth year at Nippon Sport Science University, he heard that a new high school in Kasukabe City was looking for a baseball team coach, and when he went for an interview, he was surprised.

“Shinko Private Schools would ask you to go to Koshien in about five years to promote the school’s name.If they asked you that, you wouldn’t have accepted, but the school didn’t ask you to go to Koshien, let alone Koshien. This was the deciding factor. I felt the joy of creating a team by coloring on a pure white piece of paper.”

Suddenly 100 people joined the club. Honda participated in the 1975 selection tournament as Kochi’s captain, and in the final they defeated Tokai University Sagami, which had Tatsunori Hara and Hideto Muranaka, in overtime, becoming the first Kochi Prefecture team to win. A large number of junior high school students gathered there, even though I wasn’t talking about my fame.

Most of the participants came from within the prefecture, and even from the area surrounding the school.

“The only high school in Saitama that hasn’t played in Koshien is in the eastern region, so I wanted to raise local kids to achieve that goal.So far, I’ve only had one person who persuaded their parents to invite them.Basically, I don’t do any scouting. My philosophy is to compete with players who join the club themselves. Many of them are from the East.”

Runner-up at Koshien in the summer of 1993 with ace Yoshihiro Doi

If each city, town, or village of Saitama is divided into north, south, east, and west as a regional classification for sports administration, Kasukabe City is located in the eastern part.

He won his first victory at the fall prefectural tournament in 1988, and felt confident that he could compete in Saitama. The team from the fall of 1990 to the summer of 1991, which featured players such as Noriyuki Shiroishi and Satoshi Kashibuchi, who went on to play professionally, and appeared in Koshien for the first time in consecutive springs and summers, is said to be the strongest. Kasukabe Kyoei is the only private school to win in the fall, spring, and summer with the same team. All players were from Saitama, and there were only three main players from outside the eastern region.

At Koshien in the summer of 1993, with the ace on the left, Yoshihiro Doi, it was the second runner-up for a Saitama Prefecture team in 42 years, the first being Kumagaya in 1951. Considering Honda’s motto, which marks the 14th year since its founding, this silver award is something to be commended.

“My teaching policy is to connect my personal and school life to play.It doesn’t matter whether I’m a little good at baseball or great. The basic thing is to hone the most precious humanity through baseball. I’ve been doing this for 44 years with the idea that it’s good.”

Don’t be proud, be a teacher before being a director. Honda has been telling himself this.

There are seven alumni active at the Tokyo Six Universities, including Meiji University’s ace Kenichi Murata, who was drafted fourth by Softbank at the recent draft meeting. These are the students who entered the school through the entrance exam. “My ultimate goal after deciding not to go to a baseball school was to have students from the University of Tokyo.Last year’s main ronin students might pass the exam next year. There have been many students who have taken the exam so far, and even those who were two points short. there was”

Kochi/Tosa High School also promotes both literary and military arts, and its baseball team has played in Koshien a total of 12 times. Kazushi Hamada, an alumnus and former manager of the University of Tokyo baseball team, visited Honda and asked the player if he would like to play baseball at the University of Tokyo. He often participated in training at the University of Tokyo.

The only player who talked to his parents and recruited them: “They stormed my home.”

Doi, who currently belongs to Seibu, is smart, and Giants Atsushi Nakazato can study well, and Lotte’s Hiroyuki Kobayashi took the exam with a private tutor. Murata’s report card during his middle school days was all 4’s. “Although they are not scholarship students, they all come to our school because they want to play baseball. All of the kids are able to work hard at both baseball and studies, and none of them quit their club activities.”

Honda, with his jet-black face and sharp eyes as if he were aiming for his prey, smiled broadly. He seemed very happy.

Katsuhiro Hiratsuka, an ace and No. 4 second-year student, was the only player who went as far as wooing his parents to recruit him. After graduating from Meiji University and entering the workforce, he played for four teams, including Yokohama, and is currently in charge of scouting for Hanshin.

“He’s a great player, so I thought I’d regret it if I didn’t invite him, so I stormed his home.He was a naughty guy who boycotted practice, but he made the right decision to come to my house.Hiratsuka’s father was from Meiji University, Hiratsuka was from Meiji University, and Hiratsuka’s son was also there. We played at Meiji University. It lasted for three generations.”

Also, his white teeth spilled out.
