Culture contributes 2.9% of GDP in Mexico: Inegi – El Sol de México

The culture sector contributed 815,902 million pesos to the national economy last year, which represented 2.9 percent of the total GDP, the Inegi reported this Friday.

The amount was 12.6 percent higher than what was recorded in 2021, indicated the Culture Satellite Account in Mexico.

According to the report, cultural activities in the country, such as theaters, cinemas and museums, among others, employed about 1.5 million people, 3.6 percent of jobs.

The Inegi pointed out that the cultural area with the greatest contribution to GDP is crafts, which generated 19.3 percent of the total contribution of this sector to the economy.

It was followed by digital content and the internet, which contributed 18.6 percent; as well as audiovisual media, such as television or cinema, and design and creative services, with 18 and 12.8 percent, respectively.

In entities such as Michoacán, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Yucatán, Quintana Roo, Puebla, Tlaxcala, Morelos and Mexico City, the contribution of culture to the economy was greater than the national average, with between 3.2 and 7.3 percent.

In 2022, the areas of the culture sector with the highest annual growth, indicated the Inegi, were the visual and plastic arts, with an increase of 37.5 percent, as well as audiovisual media and performing arts and shows, with increases of 27.4 and 26 percent. cent, respectively.
