Austria celebrates victory against rivals Germany. However, an action during the game causes controversy afterwards. It’s about national coach Nagelsmann, who is said to have used an unfair trick. Clear words are spoken on the ORF.

The day after their national team’s big victory, a scene in Austria caused discussions and anger. During the 2-0 (1-0) win against Germany on Tuesday evening in Vienna, German national coach Julian Nagelsmann apparently asked his goalkeeper Kevin Trapp to fake an injury. The reason: Nagelsmann wanted to have a little more time for tactical and personnel changes after the red card for offensive star Leroy Sané.

In Austria they have no understanding whatsoever – experts and fans on social media criticize Nagelsmann heavily. “This is grossly unsportsmanlike,” said Roman Mählich, an expert at the ORF television station. He was once a national player for Austria.

The whole thing happened in the 49th minute of the game. The German team was in disarray because of Sané’s outburst, when he resorted to violence after a duel with Phillipp Mwene. In order to get this at least somewhat under control with changes and substitutions, Nagelsmann apparently asked Trapp to sit down. The national coach wanted to bring a defensive player into the game in Benjamin Henrichs.

From the experts’ perspective, the television images show Nagelsmann instructing goalkeeper Trapp to grab the back of his thigh and sit on the grass in order to make treatment possible. This in turn was intended to give Henrichs time to prepare for his mission and to give him a piece of paper with instructions that the defender could then pass on to his teammates on the pitch.

In fact, the pictures show Nagelsmann whistling on the sidelines – apparently to get Trapp’s attention. And then makes a gesture with his arms that could mean “Sit down!” The Eintracht Frankfurt goalkeeper actually wanted to take the goal kick, but then falls to the ground.

“That should be stopped”

“There you go, that’s pathetic,” said ORF commentator Thomas König about Nagelsmann and Trapp’s action: “I’m not doing that as a German national team.” And Mählich said: “That should be stopped because it’s of course grossly unsportsmanlike .”

After a short break from treatment, Trapp was able to continue playing, while Henrichs moved to the left side. As is well known, none of this achieved anything. Except for a little extra trouble afterwards.
