[스포츠서울 | 김경무 전문기자] Discovering the second Ahn Se-young.

In order to discover aspiring badminton players and develop international competitiveness, the ‘2023 Miryang Wowon Yonex Korea Junior Open Badminton Championships’, in which Yonex Korea (CEO Kim Cheol-woong) participates as the title sponsor, will be held for 7 days from the 27th to December 3rd in Miryang, Miryang-si, Gyeongsangnam-do. It will be held at the badminton stadium.

It is the only international junior competition approved by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) in Korea. The ‘Woncheon Bae Elementary School Badminton Competition’, which was held for 21 years since 1994, was expanded and developed into this competition starting in 2017.

‘Woncheon’ (原川) is the nickname of the late Chairman Kim Deok-in, founder of Dongseung Trading Co., Ltd., the Korean distributor of Yonex, a Japanese global sports brand.

Ahn Se-young, world number one in women’s singles, and current national players such as men’s doubles and mixed doubles star Seo Seung-jae have grown through this competition.

More than 1,000 athletes from 11 countries, including Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Indonesia, will participate in this tournament. It is played in men’s and women’s singles, doubles, and mixed doubles by age group (U-19, U-17, U-15, U-13).

Kim Min-seon (Chiak High School), last year’s U-17 women’s singles winner, is attracting attention as the next Ahn Se-young, and will compete this time as well. Kim Min-seon, the younger of her twin sisters, finished second in the U-13 women’s singles in 2018 and U-15 women’s singles in 2019, and finally reached the top of the U-17 women’s singles last year.

Kim Min-seon, along with her older sister Kim Min-ji, has never lost a championship in women’s doubles since the U-13 level, but due to Kim Min-ji’s absence in this tournament, she will only compete in singles.

Seoul Physical Education High School Cho Hyun-woo was the U-17 men’s doubles winner last year and is aiming to win the U-19 men’s singles title this year.

Kim Cheol-woong, CEO of Yonex Korea, said, “Continuous youth development becomes an asset and competitive edge of Korean badminton. “Yonex Korea will continue its commitment to youth development since its founding and will continue to provide unsparing support for the development of Korean badminton,” he said.

The finals, held on December 3, will be broadcast on SPOTV. [email protected]
