Injury Woes for Roma: Mourinho’s Update on Smalling, Plums, and Abraham

At the beginning of the season José Mourinho had to deal with numerous injuries, but now the alarm seems to have been lifted. At the moment, with Renato’s recovery Sanches and Lorenzo Pellegrinithey just are three Giallorossi players are unavailable: Chris SmallingMarash Plums e Tammy Abraham.

The English central defender is the thorniest case and in the last press conference, dated 25 November, Mourinho teased the player: “Smalling is not a boy who knows how to play in pain, he pulls back a little. In the last week he hasn’t spent even a minute outside the medical department, he doesn’t even know if he is cold or hot. However, this was the first week without pain, we have planned that next week she can return to the field with the athletic trainer. I don’t expect Smalling in the next 2/3 weeks, he’s late. What if he comes back before 2024? No, let’s hope“. Smalling has been struggling for months with a tendon discomfort at the insertion between the quadriceps femoris and the tibial plateaua physical problem that is keeping him out of Rome-Milan of September 1st, last appearance on the pitch. To resolve the problem, the class of ’89 also went to London at the end of October for a consultation with the specialist Andy Williams (the same one who operated on Abraham), but Mourinho’s statements do not suggest a quick recovery: absent for 88 days, the thirty-four year old could in fact return between the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024.

Maras Plums has been absent from the playing fields since 29 April following the rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of the right knee during Roma-Milan on 29 April (32nd matchday of the 2022/23 Serie A). Operated on May 7th by Dr. Andrea Panzeri at the Casa di Cura La Madonnina in Milan, the rehabilitation phase of the Albanian center back is in its final stages and yesterday he carried out part of the training with the team. Marash will continue his personalized path between differentiated work and sessions with the rest of his teammates while waiting to return to the field. Absent for 213 days, he is expected to return in about a month and the possibility of a short period in Spring to recover the best physical shape cannot be ruled out.

Tammy too Abraham is working to recover from rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of the left knee remedied on the occasion of Rome-Spezia of 4 June, last day of the 2022/23 championship. Operated on 7 June by Dr. Andy Williams at the Cromwell Hospital in London, the English center forward will certainly not return before December, in fact his return to the group is expected between the end of January and mid-February. Absent for 177 daystoday the twenty-six year old trained on the field, but only carried out personalized work.
