Jannik Sinner will end the tennis year in fourth place, that much is certain. For comparison: exactly a year ago, the 22-year-old was in 15th place in the ATP rankings as a newcomer. At that time he was listed directly in front of Matteo Berettini. Sinner is now Italy’s undisputed number one, while Berettini has slipped to 90th place.
Sinner’s winning streak at the ATP Finals in Turin, which was only stopped by Novak Djokovic in the final on Sunday, brought him another 1,000 world ranking points. As a result, he is gradually approaching third place, which just a few weeks ago seemed to be an astronomical distance away. Third-placed Daniil Medvedev has 7,600 points, which is 1,100 more than Sinner.
Sinner conqueror Novak Djokovic is at the top of the rankings – and he is completely unchallenged. The Serbian Grand Slam record champion is entering his 400th week as number one in the world rankings this Monday. “It was definitely one of my best seasons. The way Carlos and Jannik played, I had to raise my level,” explained the industry leader after the final victory in Turin. The Sinner mentioned, however, summed up: “In the second half of the season I was mentally much stronger. I didn’t complain so much when something didn’t go my way.”
No Azzurro has ever been this good
The fact is, no player from Italy has ever finished the tennis year in the top four. The legendary Adriano Panatta was also in 4th place in 1976, but for “only” 3 weeks. Although Sinner’s season goes into extra time starting Thursday in the Davis Cup finals, there are no ATP points to be won there.

The second best Azzurro in the ATP computer is Italy’s second youngster, 21-year-old Lorenzo Musetti, ranked 27th. In addition to Sinner, another 5 South Tyroleans are listed in the world rankings. The best of them is Alexander Weis, who made people sit up and take notice at the weekend by reaching the final of the $25,000 tournament in Antalya.
