Los Angeles Angels Hire Ron Washington as Oldest Active Manager in Major Leagues

ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Los Angeles Angels hired Ron Washington as manager on Wednesday.

Aged 71, Washington becomes the oldest manager to currently hold this position in the Majors.

Washington led the Texas Rangers from 2007 to 2014, winning two American titles and posting a 664-611 record. He spent the last seven seasons as a third base coach for the Atlanta Braves, helping the team win the World Series in 2021.

Washington replaces Phil Nevin, who did not have his contract renewed last month after an unsuccessful season and a half with the Angels.

The Angels are in the midst of a streak of eight losing seasons and nine seasons without making the playoffs. The two longest active streaks in the Majors.

The Angels are turning to a baseball veteran to squeeze the most out of a team that has failed to live up to expectations in recent years, despite a large payroll and three-time Most Valuable Player winner. American Mike Trout. Shohei Ohtani, the team’s other star, became a free agent this week.

Washington knows the Western section of American very well. In addition to his time with the Rangers, he spent 13 seasons as an instructor with the Oakland Athletics.

Washington surpasses Rangers’ Bruce Bochy and Braves’ Brian Snitker as the oldest active manager in the majors. Bochy and Snitker are both 68 years old.
