Luca Brecel plunders bank account and buys two new luxury cars “for extra motivation”

After winning his world title, Luca Brecel immediately spent half his prize money on a Ferrari. This week he also added a Range Rover and a Porsche Taycan to his growing fleet. “It helps me stay motivated,” the Limburger explained his shopping spree on Sunday.

“This week I bought two cars and suddenly I am no longer a millionaire,” said “The Belgian Bullet”, after he qualified for the eighth finals of the UK Championship with a 6-4 win against the Chinese Yuan Sijun. “I spent £400,000 on those cars and it was a well-considered decision. I wanted to recreate the feeling I had at the start of my career, feeling the same pressure to perform. I needed some encouragement, some realization that it’s time to get back to work.”

“Becoming world champion has been a dream since I first picked up a cue as a nine-year-old. After that goal was achieved, the hunger subsided somewhat. Not that I became lazy, but it became harder to motivate before each tournament. If I lost, I went home with a smile. That’s not a good attitude. I don’t like that feeling and something had to change. I wanted that hunger for tournament victories again, I was tired of going out in the first rounds.”

“I’m a bit tired of people saying I’m lazy”

In his match against Yuan, Brecel experienced highs and lows. “With a 4-2 lead, I still had difficulty maintaining focus. Only when it was 4-4 did I start playing better again. Those mistakes have to be removed, then I will become dangerous again. It wasn’t my best race, but the motivation is there. I want to grow back to my best level of fitness. For myself, but also for the people who want to see the world champion at work. I don’t want to disappoint them and I don’t want to disappoint myself. Besides, I’m a little tired of people saying I’m lazy. Apparently I sometimes give the impression that I don’t care about snooker, even though it is my passion. I love the sport and I like to perform well and win. Maybe I should show the latter more often.”

If Brecel wins the UK Championship, he will once again be £250,000 richer and become number one in the world. That is not yet a goal in itself for the Limburger. “I’m still young and I have the feeling that I will be number one one day anyway. I’ve already been off it for a single match, one frame even. If I had absolutely wanted first place, I would have played the Wuhan Open, but first place is not really bothering me at the moment. On the other hand, it is something I want to check off at some point, I’m not going to lie about that.”
