Memphis Depay made his return to Atlético Madrid on Saturday after two months of injuries. The Dutch international was allowed to participate for ten minutes as a substitute for the Madrilenians, who recorded an economical competition victory over Mallorca in the run-up to the Champions League match with Feyenoord: 0-1.
Three days before the meeting with Feyenoord, Atlético made a mediocre impression in the Metropolitano stadium. Coach Diego Simeone’s team hardly created any chances in the first half. Only after 64 minutes did Antoine Griezmann score the opening goal with a striking header, which was also the winning one.
The 29-year-old Memphis was allowed to participate in the final minutes as a substitute for Álvaro Morata. The 88-time Dutch international played his last match on September 24 against Real Madrid (2-1 win). Since then he has been sidelined with a muscle injury.
With the victory, Atlético climbed to third place and has the same number of points as FC Barcelona, although the Catalans have played one more match. Atlético travels to Rotterdam on Monday, where the Champions League match with Feyenoord awaits on Tuesday at 9 p.m. The Rotterdam team lost the first leg in Madrid 3-2.
