Mexican Tennis Open Organizers Consider Alternative Venue After Hurricane Otis Devastates Acapulco

After the passage of Hurricane Otis that left Acapulco devastated, the organizers of the Mexican Tennis Open are analyzing other alternatives for holding the tournament, which was scheduled to be played from February 26 to March 2, 2024.

In a press release published this Wednesday, Mextenis, the organizing company of the ATP 500 tournament, explained that last Monday members of the company visited the tournament arena facilities.

From that day on, the directors were in charge of analyzing the different alternatives to hold the tournament. Mextenis did not reveal the status of the Acapulco arena, but assured that “they will announce a decision as soon as possible.”

Hurricane Otis generated economic losses in Acapulco estimated at 16 billion dollars and the damage reached 80% of the hotels in Acapulco, 16 thousand homes and 20 thousand vehicles, in addition to 48 deaths.

The organizers mentioned that they delivered humanitarian aid collected at their collection center and asked to continue donating to the victims.

Tsitsipas, among the figures of the 2024 Mexican Tennis Open

The 2024 edition of the Mexican Open has as the main figures in its main draw the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, sixth racket in the world, the Norwegian Casper Ruud (seventh), the German Alexander Zverev (eighth) and the American Taylor Fritz (ninth).

For the first time in history, the Acapulco tournament, the most important in Mexico on the ATP tour, was going to be held two days after the Los Cabos Open, the other tennis tournament run by Mextenis.

This allowed several of Acapulco’s figures, such as Tsitsipas, to confirm their participation in both tournaments.

The Mexican Open has been held since 1993 and has had as its top champions the Spaniards Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer, along with the Austrian Thomas Muster, all with four titles.

In the 2023 edition, which commemorated the 30 years of the competition, the winner was the Australian Alex de Minaur, who won his first title in the tournament by defeating the American Tommy Paul in the final and winning the title of the Mexican Tennis Open.
