The Mexican team lost as a visitor to Honduras by 2-0 in the first leg of the quarterfinals of the League of Nations Concacaf, which qualifies six teams for the Copa América to be held in the United States next year.

The match took place at the National Stadium in Tegucigalpa and the Hondurans won with goals from Anthony Lozano Colón, in the 30th minute, and Bryan Rochez in the 72nd minute.

With this result Mexico will host Honduras again next Wednesday at the Azteca Stadium with the need to win by three goals to qualify or by two to force extra time.

The quarterfinals had begun on Thursday with the United States’ victory over Trinidad and Tobago 3-0 at home, while yesterday Panama surprised Costa Rica as a visitor, led by Argentine Gustavo Alfaro, and beat them 3-0.

This Saturday, starting at 12:30, the first leg of the quarterfinals will be completed with the match between local Jamaica and Canada in Kingston.

In the 2024 Copa América, 16 teams will compete, the 10 that usually make up it from Conmebol and an additional six from Concacaf.

The Concacaf teams will be defined in two stages. The winners of the Nations League quarterfinals will qualify first, then the four losing teams will have the opportunity to qualify through a single-match Play-In in March 2024 from which the other two qualifiers will emerge.

Between Tuesday and Wednesday, revenge will be played with the following matches: Trinidad and Tobago-United States; Panama-Costa Rica; Mexico-Honduras and Canada Jamaica.
