Mick Schumacher’s sporting future clarified

No regular cockpit in Formula 1, but a new challenge at the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans: Mick Schumacher has clarified his sporting future for the coming year. The 24-year-old is taking the step into the World Endurance Championship, but will probably remain a reserve driver for the top Formula 1 team Mercedes, as he did this season.

The French manufacturer Alpine announced on Wednesday that it had signed the son of Formula 1 record world champion Michael Schumacher for the coming season and is targeting, among other things, a start at the prestigious classic in Le Man with the German.

“I missed racing sorely this year,” said Schumacher: “It’s what I’ve loved since I was a child and it was sometimes difficult to watch the other drivers on the track.”

Schumacher was promoted to regular driver in Formula 1 for the 2021 season. He drove for the US team Haas for two years, but lost his cockpit for the 2023 season to the German veteran Nico Hülkenberg (Emmerich).

The Mercedes team led by record champion Lewis Hamilton signed Schumacher as a replacement driver. Since then he has done important work, especially in the simulator, and was present in the paddock during the races.

In October, Schumacher completed test drives for Alpine in the French’s new hypercar in Jerez and was impressive.

“We were very happy with his performance and with the way he dealt with the team. I think he was happy too,” Alpine’s team boss Bruno Famin said at the beginning of November on the sidelines of the Mexican Grand Prix.
