Neymar Undergoes Surgery on Left Knee, Races to Recover for 2024 Copa America

Belo Horizonte

Neymar has undergone surgery on his left knee to repair an anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus injury he suffered. The Brazilian striker is now racing against time to recover before the 2024 Copa America.

Sky Sports reported that the operation was carried out in Belo Horizonte, Brazil on Thursday (2/11) local time. Neymar is estimated to need 6-12 months to fully recover.

However, the medical staff of the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) is optimistic that the 31-year-old player can recover in time before the Copa America is held next June, as reported by ESPN.

As is known, Neymar suffered this injury while defending Brazil in the match against Uruguay in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers in the CONMEBOL zone last month. His left foot seemed to land incorrectly after fighting for the ball with Nicolás de la Cruz.

Neymar groaned in pain and was carried off the pitch on a stretcher. This is his second serious injury this year after suffering a right ankle injury last February, making him require surgery and miss playing for Paris Saint-Germain until the end of last season.

He then moved to Al Hilal in August this year, but only made five appearances and scored one goal and three assists before having to be sidelined again for a long time.

Neymar is Brazil’s all-time top scorer with 79 goals in 128 matches, but he has never led the Selecao to win the World Cup or Copa America.
