San Francisco 49ers Hopeful for Renewed Confidence After Bye Week, Face Tough Matchup Against Jacksonville Jaguars

San Francisco.— For Brock Purdy, Nick Bosa and the San Francisco 49ers, the bye week couldn’t have come at a better time.

Mired in a three-game losing streak and with a growing list of questions on both sides of the ball, coach Kyle Shanahan’s squad is hopeful that the extra rest has been enough to clear up doubts and renew confidence.

However, for Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars (6-2), not being active last weekend can be a double-edged sword.

A fair reward for a team on a five-win streak, or an excuse for a young and inexperienced team to lose concentration.

Although San Francisco (5-3) is coming off a week without activity, this does not mean it has been inactive. Quite the opposite. At the trade deadline they acquired defensive end Chase Young, who will join his former Ohio State teammate Bosa to form a formidable defensive front. Add to that the return of injured players — tackle Trent Williams and receiver Deebo Samuel — the 49ers are far from being, at least on paper, a team mired in their worst skid since the beginning of the 2021 campaign.

But it’s not all good news, on Sunday they travel to the other end of the country to play at noon against the Jaguars who have shown themselves to be perhaps the most balanced team in the entire NFL. They have attempted 275 passes, they have run the ball 237 times. They have nine scores through the air and the same number on the ground. Their attack is the tenth most productive. Their defense is the eighth best in points allowed and leads the entire League with 18 steals.

San Francisco running back Christian McCaffrey has 17 consecutive games with at least one touchdown and is looking to break a tie for first all-time with Hall of Famer Lenny Moore.

Kyle Shanahan, head coach of San Francisco, has said that he will continue to trust the young Purdy, despite how bad he has looked in recent games: “I feel like he is trying to get us back to what we did at the beginning of the season. I like your process; I like how he sees everything. When he speaks, he knows exactly what happened. I love the risks he takes, but he has to be smart with it, because sometimes he takes a few too many.”
