Shohei Ohtani and Ronald Acuna Jr. Make History as Unanimous MVP Selections

Despite an injury-shortened season, Shohei Ohtani won the American League MVP award. He is the first player in history to win this prestigious award unanimously on two occasions.

Ohtani, who is currently a free agent, is expected to be one of the most sought-after free-agent players in MLB history.

Last year, Ohtani captured the American League home run crown with a total of 44. He led the league in on-base percentage with 41.2%, as well as in MPP (1.066).

Ohtani established himself as baseball’s most dominant hitter while posting a 3.14 ERA in 132 innings on the mound. The opposing batters’ average of .184 was the best among American League pitchers who had thrown at least 130 innings. During that span, he collected 167 strikeouts while posting a 10-5 record.

Ohtani had his season cut short at 135 games due to an elbow issue that will keep him from pitching for the entire 2024 season.

Texas Rangers teammates Corey Seager and Marcus Semien took the 2nd and 3rd positions, respectively, in the voting.

Acuna honored for historic season

In the National League, Atlanta Braves right fielder Ronald Acuna Jr was also unanimously named MVP.

This is the very first choice that the MVPs are named unanimously in both leagues.

Acuna became the first player in history to hit at least 40 home runs and steal at least 70 bases in a single season. He hit 41 home runs and led major league baseball with 73 stolen bases.

Acuna also led the MLB with 149 runs scored, 217 hits and a .416 on-base percentage. He led the National in terms of MPP (1,012) and at-bats (643). He maintained an impressive batting average of .337.
