Southern Europeans led by Sinner to play Davis Cup final in quarter of a century

The southern Europeans, led by Sinner, will play their first Davis Cup final in a quarter of a century against Australia on Sunday (4 p.m.). The only title won in the team competition came in 1976.

At the start, Miomir Kecmanovic won the duel between the number two players against Lorenzo Musetti 6:7 (7:9), 6:2, 6:1 and put Serbia in the lead.

Djokovic then missed three match points against Sinner in a repeat of the final at the ATP Finals last Sunday and lost 2:6, 6:2, 5:7.

In the decisive doubles, Sinner and Lorenzo Sonego defeated Djokovic/Kecmanovic 6:3, 6:4.

Fuss about the Serbs’ refused doping test

Before the semi-final game, a media report about a failed doping test by the Serbs before the quarter-final against Great Britain caused a stir. As the Spanish newspaper “Marca” further reported, the team agreed to blood and urine samples after the game.

Djokovic, 36, criticized on-site methods as a result of the incident and said he could not understand why the test was scheduled before his match as it would disrupt his preparation. He went on to complain about a “completely illogical” situation that he had never faced before.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) defended its actions to the AFP news agency on Saturday.

“Due to the format of the team competitions, which include the Davis Cup, teams may be notified before the start of the games that they have been selected for doping controls and they will provide their samples when they are ready,” a spokesman said ITIA: “Between the notification and the submission of the sample, you will be supervised by a member of the anti-doping team.”
