In team championships, the team result counts, so the club has to bring a balanced range to the start. This explains the cooperation between several clubs in the “Styrian” student group in Kirchbach.
Tournaments are the best training. So it was clear as day for the Raiffeisen Stainz judo section to take part in the Styrian student team championships last Sunday in Kirchbach. “The kids are extremely motivated in training,” said head coach Christa Schimpel, optimistic about getting the team onto the podium. It looked like that for a long time, but in the final tally it only came in fourth place, while Zeltweg/Mürzzuschlag, ASKÖ Graz/Judo Bulls Graz and Kirchbach/Eichfeld/Feldbach took places 1-3. The cooperation between the clubs is based on the goal of filling as many age and weight categories as possible. Stainz teamed up with the Köflach judo club, which sent Anna-Katharina Smagoi. The majority of Marlene Amon, Florentina Langmann, Maria Moik, Lena Mörth, Jana Pignitter and Viktoria Pikulnig wore the Stainzer colors.
Graz student tournament
A week later, the Stainzers attended the ASKÖ Judo Club Graz’s student tournament, which was attended by 180 participants from U-8 to U-14. And the podium places also worked: Maria Moik won the day in the U-12 up to 48 kilograms, Nikita Kotov (U-14 up to 60 kg) and Jana Pignitter (U-12 up to 36 kilograms) each took second place and with Jannek Grill (U-10 up to 22 kg), Jana Scheer (U-10 up to 25 kg), Jonathan Kohlbacher (U-10 up to 38 kg) and Paul Mörth (U-10 up to 42 kg) four athletes made it Jump to 3rd place. Isabella Dengg and Florentina Langmann (both 4th place) as well as Alex Mochart-Peiner, Laura Diestler and Lena Mörth (all 5th place) barely made it onto the podium. “There were careless mistakes,” said Christa Schimpel, describing her protégés’ performance as satisfactory. Their particular joy: Some “newbies” got a taste of tournament air for the first time.
