The NBA Introduces the In-Season Tournament: A New Exciting Addition to the Regular Season

For the very first time in the NBA, the regular season will be punctuated this year by the In-Season Tournament, which begins this Friday, November 3 and will last until the 9 next December. And as with every great new product, we are here to explain the concept to you in detail. Let’s go !

What is the NBA In-Season Tournament?

As its name suggests, the In-Season Tournament is a tournament that takes place during the regular season. Like football leagues where teams play for the championship while competing in cup matches, the 30 NBA teams will now have the opportunity to win a trophy other than the famous Larry O’Brien Trophy for the month of June .

Ladies and gentlemen, say hello to the “NBA Cup”!

As indicated above, the In-Season Tournament will begin this Friday, November 3 and will last until December 9, 2023, the day of the grand finals at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The NBA In-Season Tournament, how does it work?

The In-Season Tournament will begin with a group stage that brings together all 30 NBA teams. These were divided into six groups of five teams, with three groups bringing together the 15 teams from the Eastern Conference and three groups bringing together the 15 teams from the Western Conference. The groups were formed via a random draw based on the results of the 2022-23 regular season.

Here are the 6 groups of the In-Season Tournament:

The concept is simple: between November 3 and 28 (Tuesday evening and Friday evening), each team will play once against the four opponents in their group, with two home matches and two away matches.

The best team in each group (6 teams, 3 in each conference) and the two best teams among those who finished in second place in their group (one per conference) will qualify for the second knockout phase. In the event of a tie, the teams will be decided according to their results during direct confrontations (when they are in the same group) or the difference in points (when they are not in the same group).

NBA In-Season Tournament matches broadcast nationally (group stage):

Bucks – Knicks (3 novembre, ESPN)
Nuggets – Mavericks (3 novembre, ESPN)
Celtics – Nets (10 novembre, ESPN)
Suns – Lakers (10 novembre, ESPN)
Thunder – Spurs (14 novembre, TNT)
Nuggets – Clippers (14 novembre, TNT)
Kings – Spurs (17 novembre, ESPN)
Jazz – Suns (17 novembre, ESPN)
Sixers – Cavaliers (21 novembre, TNT)
Lakers – Jazz (21 novembre, TNT)
Magic – Celtics (24 novembre, NBA TV)
Grizzlies – Suns (24 novembre, NBA TV)
Knicks – Heat (24 novembre, ESPN)
Warriors – Spurs (24 novembre, ESPN)
Heat – Bucks (28 novembre, ESPN)
Kings – Warriors (28 novembre, ESPN)

All matches from the NBA In-Season Tournament will also be broadcast on NBA League Pass, which also offers a very nice student offer at the moment.

The knockout phase will begin on December 4 with the quarter-finals, which will be played over two days (December 4-5). The top two teams in the group stage, in each conference, will have home-field advantage (and the team with the best record will host the team that finished second in its group). The four teams qualified at the end of the quarter-finals will then meet in Las Vegas for the final four, Final Four style, with the semi-finals on December 7 and the grand final on December 9 at the T-Mobile Arena.

You should know that all matches of the In-Season Tournament – except the final – will also count for the regular season results. There will therefore be no more than the usual 82 games for the NBA teams, except for the two finalists who will play an 83rd.

The inaugural NBA In-Season Tournament begins this Friday, Nov. 3 when Group Play games tip off the action.

What rewards for the winners?

In addition to the trophy and the banner that goes with it, the players of the winning team will win $500,000 each. The players on the finalist team will all win $200,000, the semi-finalists will walk away with $100,000, while the quarter-finalists will settle for $50,000.

Individual awards will also be awarded at the end of the NBA In-Season Tournament, with a competition MVP awarded to the best player and a nomination to the All-Tournament Team for the five best basketball players in the tournament.
