TV Images Cause Controversy in Wolfsburg Match: Commentator Criticizes Composition and Accuracy

In addition to Wolfsburg’s weak performance, the TV images shown live on ZDF also had a negative impact. An ARD commentator caused a stir with a tweet about it.

Bernd Schmelzer, who has been working for First German Television since 1991 on live football broadcasts, summaries for sports shows and Alpine programs, criticized the incorrectly composed image material that was played out. Schmelzer wrote on Missed goal, wrong slow motion, didn’t deserve the game.”

These problems became particularly noticeable in the aftermath of Klara Bühl’s 2-0 win for FC Bayern. Instead of a repeat of the goal, a slow motion of the previous 1-0 was broadcast before the 2-0 flickered across the screens from a different camera perspective.

Schmelzer, who published a non-fiction book about women’s football with former national soccer player Nia Künzer in the summer, expressly did not direct his criticism at ZDF, but rather at the TV service provider that made the images available to the Mainz broadcaster .

However, Schmelzer spoke out again in the Bild newspaper afterwards and vented his displeasure: “If you broadcast a men’s game in this way, no one would talk about Tuchel and Matthäus anymore.”
