Twente Rischiatutto, PSV L’Eredità • Sportellate

Unbeaten in the Eredivisie, PSV also eats the crumbs left by Twente.

“Erasmus” is the Monday column in which we tell you about a match from the international football weekend. The return from the international break offers a clash at the top of Dutch football: 3rd against 1st, Twente-PSV Eindhoven. You can catch up on previous episodes here.

Perhaps the only cornerstones of Italian popular sentiment, capable of identifying itself only when it recognizes its own infinitesimal fragmentations, are culinary specialties and parochialism. Because the mafia and the mandolin aren’t either, it’s a speck, but the pizza, that is sacred and without fail ours, but ours from our neighbourhood, not from outside, otherwise you know that the dough has too little leavening or how much percentage of salt out of the total flour is goes to visit. Elements that are so identifying that, if not recognized or even snubbed, they seem a disgrace to the human essence. Even more so if mixed with another place of the vulgar soul such as a football stadium.

The Grolsch Vesteknown as Arke Stadion from 1998 to 2008, is named after a beer and a castle. Grolsch is one of the most famous breweries in the Netherlands, based in the non-administrative region of Enschede. You know it could be made with fortress, referring to the fortified town of Groenlo where hops began fermenting in 1615 by order of Willem Neerfeldt. The only drawback of choosing a beer and a castle to name a football stadium: choosing a beer and a castle only close to the city that hosts the stands and the green rectangle.

Groenlo and Grolsch are part of theOverijssel but they are about thirty km from the university district of Enschede, where the influence of German beers has had an even greater charm than that of home. Sacrilege, in short. As if Palermo’s Moccagatta di Alessandria was titled “Mole Balocco”.

“It’s strange that FC Twente earns more from beer than from players. I don’t see anywhere in Europe a club that earns more from beer than from football players”: not if the name of the stadium is Grolsch , not if the balance sheet assets are reached by the €10.5 million deriving from the food & beverage department.

Luckily for us, not all people have the same ability to lose themselves in a glass of water, and so De Grolsch Veste is without any problem the home of Tukkers. Twente-PSV it is quite simply the best that Dutch football can offer at the moment: having recovered from a disastrous relegation, in their fifth consecutive season in the Eredivisie, the Enschede team is offering its best version. Driven by Joseph Oostinga coach fresh from a couple of seasons of 3-4-1-2 at Roda and converted to 4-2-3-1 in July, the Twente residents at the levels of a decade ago, when Tadic and Tecatito Corona – because we always talk about beer – brought Twente behind only Ajax and Feyenoord, also ahead of PSV.

The Eindhoven team, however, seems to have no other result than the victory in the Netherlands since the beginning of the season. The only defeat so far was the 4-0 at the Emirates in London, for the rest Peter Bosz has once again impacted Oranje football as best it could not have: after the Europa League final with Ajax lost to Man Utd and the euphemistically fluctuating experiences between Germany (Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen) and France (Olympique Lyon), the native roster the coach from Appeldoorn’s season is impressive, with 12 victories in as many matches, 45 goals scored and 5 conceded.

Just a hundred seconds and Jerdy Schouten he turns towards his defenders and preaches calm, with the classic gesture with the palms of his hands more open than ever, wanting to release the tension that he wants to exorcise in others and push away from himself through every fiber of his fingertips possible. Twente have not lost at home to PSV since January 2018 and, in the Eredivisie, they have not known defeat in Enschede for over 18 months: Oosting’s gegenpressing is that of a group that knows the dangers and benefits of taking risks without the ball away from their own area: Sem Steijn: 22 year old son of Maurice Steijn relieved from the leadership of Ajax just over a month ago, he is a Dutch 14 worthy of the symbolism he embodies and is found exactly where he is needed when needed to tighten the handkerchief into which the Reds want to force the Eindhoven setters.

Even with the ball at their feet, Twente dares, with Brenet and Hilgers to swap positions of right back and central defender to identify the best internal corridor to progress with the ball. On the other hand, PSV would need captain De Jong’s deadly plays and passes to find superiority in the final third, but Twente’s lines and defensive triangles are punctual in closing in and crushing each other.

PSV’s two solutions to respond to Twente’s 4-5-1: 2-3-5 (with right midfielder, centre-forward and left-back to establish the depth in the central and intermediate flank) or 2+4, with Dest to vary the height and distances of the first line cutter.

Two paragraphs to describe a clear theory, also engaging and exciting for the exhausted De Grolsch Veste, but a first time to observe the raw and ruthless practice of football, where the theoretical philosophy must translate onto the field to legitimize one’s principles. After about twenty minutes in which PSV manages the ball but does not control the pace, after Smal takes the first shot of the match after yet another high recovery from Twente but Ugalde – who should, among other things, be the central offensive reference – touches only 1 ball, Osting’s men are victims of their own frenzy: Hilgers is badly oriented with his body on Unnerstall’s support, the inside of his foot is not in a position to block the pass of the former goalkeeper of the match and the ball escapes the trocar.

Hirving Lozano senses the opportunity to unwrap the gift like Augustus Gloop in Willy Wonka’s factory, he reaches the ball with his right foot and would have the green light to enter the penalty area. The conditional is a must: Hilgers enters with his hammer foot on the Mexican’s ankle to commit a foul, and the yellow card drawn is transformed by VAR into a red of capital importance.

Immediate Awareness — Secondary Realization

Mathias Kjölö, a Norwegian midfielder, whose agency is a name and a program (KeyPass AS), ducks and makes up for the numerical inferiority. The son of the prosecutor of Sander Berge and Alexander Sørloth, together with Brenet and Sadílek, also covers the space of the expelled comrade. Keel he lived his entire youth career in Eindhoven, Brenet he played 150 matches for Philips Sport Vereniging, Seedling only 50 but played at the Philips Stadion in both the Champions League and the Europa League: animated by the double thread that binds them to Farmersthey are the ones who allow Twente not to suffer the quality of Dest and Lozano on the wing and continue to present themselves in the opponent’s half of the field.

The practical philosophyhowever, has as its end the work, not the truth: from the progression of Rots contracted by Ramalho at the edge of the PSV area to the verticality of Bakayoko and Veerman’s counter-time right-footed shot, a few seconds pass, 80 meters and the difference between a Twente vero and a PSV ergonomic.

Vehement disorder… …in both areas.

In the interval Osting tries to overturn the rules of engagement of the match, giving up Brenet’s physicality to rely on Alfons’ dribbling ability Sampsted, arrived last January from Bodø/Glimt. The theory has foundations, based on the desire to have greater possession and compensate for numerical inferiority with the ball rather than without.

Practice speaks a different language: on a cross that in the first half would have seen Brenet overpower Lozano or address Luuk De Jong, after less than 3′ it was the former Napoli player who moved towards the center and found the captain’s head Propper, which like a pinball target only increases the unpredictability of the trajectory and tilts the game plan, incontrovertibly, towards Peter Bosz and his need to save energy in view of the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán on Wednesday. Jerdy Schouten, preacher of patience from the kick-off, commits two fouls in an amen, proving that the psychological tension of the match is slowly moving away from the route, until the complete shipwreck on the occasion of the ball from Pröpper at 0-3 Bakayoko.

What could possibly go wrong?

Until the 94th minute, Twente continued to play as they did with both 11 and 10 men, as if they didn’t have a man less, as if they were ahead in the score, as if Lozano hadn’t already received an annual dose of boos for just the suffered a foul and fell to the ground and had to hear the whistles of De Grolsch Veste until the substitution, as he would always play anyway. Beyond the result, beyond the here and now. Which, together with culinary specialties and parochialism, constitute Italian popular sentiment. Even more so if mixed with another place of the vulgar soul such as a football stadium.
