Rafael van der Vaart is disappointed with the performance of the Dutch national team against Ireland (1-0). The analyst of the NOS saw the PSV midfielder make some mistakes in passing. Pierre van Hooijdonk is also critical.
“I was a bit disappointed,” says Van der Vaart about Schouten. “I thought he made a lot of mistakes with the ball. He had a few good moments, but also a lot of ball losses. It’s all new to him. You saw him play very simple balls quickly and shoot them out. He doesn’t normally make those mistakes. I didn’t think he played very well.”

According to Pierre van Hooijdonk, Schouten did not do himself a good favor in his second international match. “There is a lot of competition. I said beforehand; where he makes the difference with Wieffer is that his passing accuracy is higher at PSV than that of Wieffer at Feyenoord. But we didn’t see any of that tonight, which is a shame.”
Van Hooijdonk thinks that national coach Ronald Koeman is also disappointed. “I think Koeman had hoped that Schouten would leave a great impression and continue PSV’s form with the Dutch national team. That didn’t happen tonight. And you can’t judge players based on the upcoming match against Gibraltar.”
