Violence Erupts in Northern Derby: Clashes Between FC St. Pauli and Hannover 96 Fans

Unsightly scenes in the northern derby! During the Friday evening game in the 2nd Bundesliga between FC St. Pauli and Hannover 96, there were clashes between parts of the visiting fans and the police in the final phase.

In the 81st minute, the law enforcement officers gained access to the guest block, which resulted in violent fights with some 96er supporters, in which pepper spray was also used. The Hannover fans threw objects at the police and some of them were pushed back inside the stadium.

Referee Richard Hempel then interrupted the game for a few minutes before it continued. The reason for the escalation was initially unclear. The game ended 0-0.

Marcus Mann, sports director of Hannover 96, announced on Sky that the incidents would be investigated: “Unfortunately, I can’t say anything about it at the moment, I found out about it relatively late. I can’t say anything yet about the triggers of this unpleasant situation, unfortunately we don’t know anything at the moment. We will get the information, but of course there are unpleasant scenes.”

When asked about the fact that there had been internal arguments among the visiting fans, Mann explained: “I don’t know any more than you about that. We’ll work through it and find the trigger.”

After the game, head coach Fabian Hürzeler was visibly shaken by what happened in the visitors’ block: “There were some fans just a few meters away from my goalkeeper and the away players. That couldn’t have been pleasant for the players. It keeps me very busy!”

2nd Bundesliga: St. Pauli misses victory in the top game

In terms of sport, both teams played an exciting game in which Hürzeler’s team missed out on extending their lead in the table, but remains the only team in the league undefeated even after the 13th game of the season. However, city rivals Hamburger SV could draw level with St. Pauli on points with a win on Saturday (from 1 p.m. in LIVETICKER) at Holstein Kiel.

St. Pauli missed its fifth home win in a row and remained without a goal for the first time since the end of August. Hannover, currently third in the table, has been waiting for a win for four away games, but earned the point with a largely concentrated defensive performance.

The hosts only had one real chance in the first half – but it was tough. After a cross from Elias Saad, Johannes Eggestein shot from the turn (16th), but Hannover’s Ron-Robert Zieler parried the shot well. Another attempt from Saad (36th) flew past.

St. Pauli then pushed vehemently for the opening goal and repeatedly won the ball in promising positions. However, in the crucial moments there was usually a lack of precision and calm. In the final phase the game was temporarily interrupted because there was turmoil in the away block.
