Abu Dhabi to Host the 2024 World Judo Championships

The International Judo Federation has entrusted the organization of the 2024 edition of the world championships, the last step on the road leading to Paris 2024, to Abu Dhabi.

The Middle East is popular with the International Judo Federation (IJF). A few months after the 2023 edition of the world championships was held in Doha, capital of Qatar, the best judokas on the planet will meet in Abu Dhabi next May. Indeed, through a press release, the IJF has confirmed that the city in the United Arab Emirates has been designated to host the 41st edition of the World Judo Championships.

“The United Arab Emirates has been an important partner of the IJF for many years, since 2009 and the first Abu Dhabi Grand Prix,” recalled the federation in a press release. Having since become a Grand Slam, the event has helped attract other competitions to the country, just like the recent veterans and kata world championships, which took place in October 2023.” However, the 2024 edition of the Worlds will have a completely different impact in the context of Olympic qualification.

Abu Dhabi, last step before Paris 2024

Indeed, the IJF recalls that these Worlds will be “the last major stage of the world circuit allowing qualification for Paris 2024”. If the French team will take advantage of its status as host country of the Olympic Games to hire one of its representatives in each of the fourteen categories, with ten places which have already been distributed to Teddy Riner or Clarisse Agbégnénou, the quotas will be in game until the very last moment and the points that will be taken in Abu Dhabi could make the difference.

Added to this is the seeded status, offering a less arduous draw in the first rounds, which will be reserved for the top eight in the world rankings in each category. “Together with the UAE Judo Federation, we are confident of offering an event of the highest quality, with the best media coverage in order to continue the promotion of judo and its values,” concluded the IJF in its press release.
