The already difficult season of the Dutch record champions Ajax Amsterdam has been enriched by a new facet since Thursday. In the round of 32 of the Cup, Ajax lost 2-3 to fourth division team USV Hercules in Utrecht and lost for the first time in the Cup against an amateur club.

After being 2-0 down in the 82nd minute, Ajax seemed to be on the way to extra time thanks to late goals from Brian Brobbey and Chuba Akpom, but conceded the decisive goal in stoppage time. Coach John van ‘t Schip spared himself the shame by attending his son’s wedding in Australia.
Ajax had a disastrous start to the season in the league and was in the relegation zone for several rounds. The team recently recovered under neocoach van ‘t Schip and is currently fifth – albeit with a respectable gap of 23 points behind leader PSV Eindhoven.
