With Sebastian Hoeneß, Alexander Nübel, Angelo Stiller and Woo-Yeong Jeong, four Stuttgart residents are celebrating a reunion with FC Bayern on Sunday. The piquant thing about Nübel’s situation: The 27-year-old is on loan to VfB and tied to FCB until 2025. Just as with Stiller, Hoeneß did not notice “any particular tension” with Nübel. “They’re both really looking forward to the game, just like we all are.”
VfB boss Alexander Wehrle even spoke out in favor of a DFB nomination during the week in Nübel’s “Münchner Merkur” newspaper, saying that he would “not be able to get past him in the German national team in the long term.” Wehrle would even “drive to Munich at any time of the day or night” to discuss a permanent commitment.
His coach also sang the praises of Nübel, who achieved an average kicker grade of 2.82 in 14 Bundesliga games. “Alex was well received from day one, but was also integrated because of the way he performed here. He immediately put in strong performances and is clearly a factor in our recovery.”
According to Hoeneß, Nübel also gave the team stability with his footballing skills and was able to support VfB’s game idea. All of this “automatically gives rise to thoughts about the national team.”
Ultimately, of course, it is the national coach’s decision, but, Hoeneß continued: “I hope that he will find his way there because I got to know him and experienced him – and saw how he can shape a game.”
