Chinese Badminton Players Prepare for 2024 Season with Overseas Training

After Chinese badminton players Luo Jianyou and Yang Jiamin concluded the China Masters in November, the 2023 season was also announced to have come to an end. They trained with foreign players during the offseason from the end of November to the beginning of December to prepare for the new season.

Taiwanese players Lin Junyi (ranked 21st in the world) and Ding Yanchen (ranked 176th in the world) came to Singapore to train with Luo Jianyou, ranked 10th in the world, from November 25th to December 5th.

Badminton Association technical director Martin told Lianhe Zaobao: “Lin Junyi and Luo Jianyou are very good friends. It is a good opportunity for him to come here to train with Luo Jianyou. Another young player Ding Yanchen also comes together, which will make us players benefited.”

Yang Jiamin, ranked 22nd in the world, did not return to China to rest immediately after finishing the China Masters. She flew to South Korea to train with An Xiying (ranked 1st in the world) and Jin Jiaen (ranked 12th in the world) and others. From November 27 Until December 10th.

The women’s singles coach of the South Korean national team is Sung Ji-hyun. Her highest world ranking before retiring was second. She became a coach after retiring in August 2021. Her coaching team members include Ahn Se-young and Kim Ga-eun.

Martin said: “Yang Jiamin is interested in training with the Korean team. After the Singapore Badminton Association contacted the Korean Badminton Association, both parties agreed to this training plan and thought it was a good opportunity. Jiamin has the opportunity to train abroad. We I believe she will benefit greatly from quality sparring.”

This is not the first time that the Chinese Badminton Association has sent players abroad to train with other players. Luo Jianyou has gone to Dubai several times to train with Danish star Axelsen. In the first half of the year, Yang Jiamin also flew to Thailand to learn skills with players such as Li Meili.

The overseas training camp for Chinese players next year has not yet been determined. The Chinese Badminton Association said that they will actively explore it. If there is a good opportunity and it is beneficial to the players, they will definitely send players to participate.

The 2024 season for Luo Jianyou and Yang Jiamin will start in Kuala Lumpur, and they will compete in the Malaysia Open (Super 1000) starting on January 9. Luo Jianyou will challenge world number one Viktor Axelsen in the first round, while Yang Jiamin will compete with Canadian player Wenshan Li, number 24 in the world.
