DFB women: DFB players beat Denmark and get a chance at the Olympics

The German national soccer players celebrated a victory against Denmark, keeping participation in the 2024 Olympic Games still within the realm of possibility. In Rostock, the team defeated Denmark 3-0 (2-0) in the second leg. In the first leg they were defeated 0-2. “Today was a completely successful day, we are all happy,” said national player Svenja Huth on ZDF.

In the sold-out Ostseestadion, captain Alexandra Popp (14th minute), Marina Hegering (26th) and Klara Bühl (90th + 3) scored the deserved victory. The team around interim national coach Horst Hrubesch has the chance of winning the group again in their own hands before the last game on Tuesday in Wales.

Hegering hits – and then sees yellow

The DFB team was already leading 2-0 at half-time after goals from team captain Popp and Hegering. The team found its success particularly in combination play and attacking from the wings, where they were supported, among others, by right-back Giulia Gwinn. Popp was able to make it 1-0 early on thanks to her header strength. The Danes, however, had little success. Sanne Troelsgaard and Amalie Vangsgaard, the double goalscorer in the first leg, still had the best chances, but goalkeeper Merle Frohms made two saves.

The 2-0 came from a corner from Klara Bühl, which Marina Hegering converted. Shortly afterwards, however, the 33-year-old received a yellow card and will therefore miss the next game against Wales. Bühl finally made it 3-0 in extra time and made the German victory perfect.

Olympic Games 2024 still possible

With the victory, the DFB players have come a little closer to taking part in the Olympics next year. Next week the final game in Wales will be about winning the group. This is the only way the team will qualify for the four-way final tournament of the Nations League at the end of February, where the two European Olympic places will be awarded. After the game against Denmark, coach Hrubesch didn’t want to say too much about the increased Olympic chances: “Now let’s do our homework,” he said.
