Djokovic European athlete of the year

Novak Djokovic is Europe’s athlete of the year for the fifth time. With the outcome of the survey announced on St. Stephen’s Day by the Polish news agency PAP, the 36-year-old Serb drew level with the Swiss record winner Roger Federer. Since 2004, someone from the tennis camp has prevailed 13 times; in 2022 it was the Polish Iga Swiatek.

21 European news agencies – including the APA – took part in the election. Djokovic left Formula 1 world champion Verstappen (NED) behind by 28 points and pole vault world champion Dupantis (SWE) by 92 points. Soccer star Erling Haaland (NOR) came fourth, another six points behind.

The “Djoker” won three of the four Grand Slam tournaments this year as well as the ATP finals; at Wimbledon he was only defeated in the final. The Spanish winner there, Carlos Alcaraz, only ended up in 13th place in the PAP election. There are no Austrians in the top 25.
