Voting can backfire if participants don’t take it seriously. This is probably what is happening in a vote that is led by a BVB star.
Dortmund – Voting for the German National Team Fan Club’s National Player of the Year is now a 13-year-old tradition. In 2023, another year full of bankruptcies, bad luck and mishaps for the DFB team, the fans are apparently not taking the vote quite as seriously: because a star from Borussia Dortmund has a huge lead over the competition – even though he has hardly played has.

With a whopping 60.4% of the votes, Emre Can is currently well ahead of his pursuer and BVB teammate Niclas Füllkrug. This currently has just 15.2% of the votes (as of Saturday, December 23rd, 3 p.m.). It seems unlikely that this result will change. The vote runs until the beginning of January.
Some people interested in football will now justifiably ask themselves what exactly Can did in the DFB uniform in the year before the 2024 European Championship. The answer is: not very much.
He only appeared in six of eleven games in 2023. He was only trusted twice over the full 90 minutes. Once against Poland in mid-June (0-1) and in mid-September in the win over France (2-1) under interim coach Rudi Völler – his last game to date with the eagle on his chest.

The BVB midfielder didn’t get a chance at all under DFB coach Julian Nagelsmann. Can was not called into the squad for the games against the USA (3:1) and Mexico (2:2). Nagelsmann was without him and BVB central defender Nico Schlotterbeck during the trip to the USA.

When the DFB team then embarrassed themselves against Turkey (2:3) and Austria (0:2), Can was out with a bruise. Given the BVB professional’s rather disappointing record, it is very surprising that so many internet users voted for him.

There could be a joke behind the vote for National Player of the Year this year. Also the Bild suspects that the fans want to make fun of the voting. The high level of participation also speaks for this. Shortly after voting began, more users took part than in the whole of last year.
A X-User (formerly Twitter) had indirectly called for the BVB captain to be elected on December 22nd: “It would be very hard if Emre Can suddenly became national player of the year without having had a single good game.”
Another X-User then explained his choice of Emre Can in an extremely humorous way: “Emre Can because he is the hero that Germany deserves. But not the one you need right now. So we vote for him. Because he can take it. Because he is not a hero. He is a silent guardian, a vigilant protector.”

With a view to 2023, there is no doubt that some creativity is required if you want to actually stand out someone positively from the DFB team, which is sometimes playing underground. This has been successful in the past.
The record winner of the vote for National Player of the Year is Mesut Özil. He won the fan voting in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2016. In 2022, Jamal Musiala was the clear winner with 66.2 percent of the votes. Now this honor could go to the BVB captain – albeit perhaps with a wink.

Apart from his manageable DFB record in 2023, he rarely showed consistently strong performances even in BVB uniform. For example, in BVB’s disappointing end to the year against Mainz 05 (1:1), Can only received a grade of sufficient in the RUHR24 individual review.
