“Football is free”: the leader of the Super League project regains hope after the CJEU decision

Following the decision of the European justice on the Super League, which considered that banning the dissident competition project of the Champions League was contrary to the law, the A22 organization hastened to propose this Thursday “a new open European competition”. And, for the occasion, delivered a press conference where she declared victory after the judgment rendered by the CJEU.

Football is free,” considers Bernd Reichart, CEO of A22. For the organization, the European Court of Justice put an end to “UEFA’s monopoly”, referring to the institution’s decision to prevent the birth of the Super League in 2021, in addition to brandishing the threat of sanctions against clubs and players who were favorable to the project. “The Court has opened the door to innovation,” adds A22: “Today football has access to the values and freedom of the European Union. And gives clubs the power to take control of their destiny.”

The CJEU’s decision was therefore seen by the organization as an open door to the emergence of a new format of European competition. Far from the virulent reactions which have surfaced in recent hours, and which do not really interpret the verdict in the same way. La Liga, firmly opposed to the Super League, recalled this Thursday morning in a press release that “the Court of Justice does not rule, in its judgment, on this specific project”.
