The Formentera athlete Andrea Romero will compete in the World University Cross Country Championships in Oman with the Spanish athletics team, as confirmed by the RFEA in its final list. On February 17 and 18, the Spanish athletics team will travel to Oman to compete in the World University Cross Country Championship, a competition that it has historically been good at, especially on a collective level: in 22 editions, Spain has won 20 team medals and 11 individual medals. In the last edition, held in Aveiro in 2022, the performance of the Spanish team was reflected in two bronze medals, from the women’s team and the mixed relay, while the men’s team finished fourth.
In the next edition of Muscat 2024, the format of the World University Cross Country Championship changes compared to previous events. Two men’s crosses will be held, one short (about 3 km) and one long (around 10 km), and the same number for women, in addition to two mixed relays: one with four relays of 1.5 or 2 km, and another with two posts between 4.5 and 6 km and the remaining two posts between 3 and 4.5 km. Andrea Romero will participate in the women’s short and the long mixed race.
A total of 16 athletes (eight women and eight men) have been preselected after meeting the criteria established by the coach José Peiró and the RFEA Sports Directorate. Four athletes per sex will compete in each of the individual events (men’s and women’s short cross, and men’s and women’s long cross), eight of those 16 will also repeat in the different relays.
Spain will go to Muscat with a truly great team, full of international athletes in lower and even senior categories. For the men’s short cross, three runners who competed in the last European Cross Country in sub-23, including the European champion of the 3000 m hurdles of the category: Alejandro Quijada, Àdam Maijó and Miguel Chazarra, in addition to Pol Oriach. The women’s short cross country will feature Marta Serrano, Spanish U23 record holder in the 3000 m hurdles and 5000 m, the Pitiusa Andrea Romero, Raquel Echeverría and Àmbar Tomàs, who was at Laeken Park on December 10.
For the long cross, the men’s team is led by Miguel Baidal, fifth sub23 in the last Eurocross and continental bronze in 10,000 m last summer. He will be accompanied by three young people who have been making headlines recently, such as Jaime Migallón, Adrià Ceballos and Mario Priego. The women’s long cross country includes Laura Domene, who also ran the Brussels European Championship as a sub23 and is an absolute world champion in trail running, the Spanish 5 km champion Alicia Berzosa, Queralt Criado and Claudia Corral.
The short mixed relay will be made up of Pol Oriach, Àdam Maijó, Marta Serrano and Raquel Echeverría, while the long one will be made up of Andrea Romero, Alicia Berzosa, Miguel Chazarra and Alejandro Quijada.
