FC Bayern becomes German football champion?
Not again – that’s probably what many citizens in Germany who are not fans of the Munich club are thinking. One of them: Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (60)!
In an interview with the “Rheinische Post”, the SPD politician teases the German record champions – and hopes that another club will win the trophy…

Lauterbach hopes Leverkusen will be champions, says: “The Bayern Munich era finally needs the final whistle.”
He adds: “I’ll also win a bet.”
However, he does not reveal what kind of bet the health minister means and who he made it to and for what purpose.
Lauterbach continued: If coach Xabi Alonso’s (42) team were to dethrone Bayern, he would be happy “for this young and strong team and for the entire Bundesliga.”

Leverkusen currently leads the Bundesliga table with 42 points from 16 games. Bayern follow with 38 points from 15 games – coach Thomas Tuchel’s team (50) still has the catch-up game against Union Berlin (January 24th, 8:30 p.m., live on Sky and on bild.de in the ticker) in hand.

FC Bayern recently became German champions eleven times in a row. The last other title holder in the Bundesliga was Borussia Dortmund – in 2012. In the 2022/2023 season, BVB came very close to wresting the title from Bayern, but then botched the German championship with a second place on matchday 34 :2 against Mainz.
Bayern won 2-1 in Cologne thanks to a last-minute goal from Jamal Musiala (20) and won the cup again. This year, the people of Munich probably don’t have to fear any competition from BVB. Coach Edin Terzic’s (41) team is eleven points behind Bayern and 15 points behind Leverkusen.
Leverkusen are definitely serious contenders this year and could steal the championship from Bayern if they maintain their form.
Health Minister Lauterbach would also be happy about that…
