Interview with Olympic Bronze Medalist Lucia Morico: A Story of Dreams and Values

«Sport, for me, has never been a sacrifice». The interview with starts exactly from here, from his words Lucia Morico, judoka born in 1975 from Marotta («I care about it, I’m proud of it»), bronze medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics. A story made of dreams and values. Between the stage and everyday life, as a mother in uniform, “because you never stop learning and doing good.”

INSIGHTS

Lucia Morico, if you were to close your eyes and look back today, what would be the first image to pop into your head?

«The sporting journey, the career made up of victories, defeats, satisfactions and even disappointments».

Does it take a lot of sacrifice for such a journey?

«For me sport has never been a sacrifice. They were choices, opportunities, heart and then the realization of dreams. Nobody ever forced me and maybe it was my secret.”

In all this, where does the Olympic medal in Athens fit into the scrapbook?

«The maximum expression of what I just said».

A snapshot from that day

«The ippon that knocked out my opponent. His fall was light. Extremely light. A particular sound was created that I still hear today.”

Speaking of today, who is Lucia Morico in 2023?

«A member of the Financial Police and a Judo instructor in her free time. Another goal that I have achieved.”

In what sense?

«The patent was my degree. Closing the circle.”

But there is also another path he is following. Right?

“I imagine the reference is to the lessons aimed at women on safe self-defense.”

Decidedly. A noble challenge, especially in a very delicate historical moment. How did all this come about?

«The association came to life from the initiative of the lawyer, my friend, Roberto Paradisi. He asked me to help him and I was happy to do so. Nowadays, without beating around the bush, self-defense for a woman is an emergency.”

How much are these lessons transmitting to you?

“Much. Meet other people, learn about their experiences, help them. These are all things that are good for those who give and those who receive.”

Let’s lighten the topic and move on to the anecdotes. Is it true that for a period of time you also trained your daughter Julia in the gym?

«I confirm, but then the road was interrupted. Let’s say so”.

Please explain better

«She practiced two sports: judo, being the daughter of two Olympians (her father is the English judoka Winston Gordon, ed.), and volleyball. When choosing, she opted for the second, and she did well. So much so that she was recently called up to the youth national team.”

What do you think of the parent-child relationship in sport?

«It’s not easy to define. The winning formula does not exist as each person’s own characteristics deriving from the family relationship take over.”

Who is, at the moment, the athlete to take as a reference in Italy?

«Jannik Sinner. Style, education, classy tennis. I would like to hug him.”

His connection with the Marche instead?

«Tight, as it should be».

The thing he couldn’t give up

“The sea”.

What was the best day of his life

«The medal, so with two children I don’t displease anyone (laughter, ed.)».

The dream that has not yet come true

“I haven’t found out yet, I will soon.”
