Israel’s Hapoel Jerusalem Struggles to Fill Basketball Roster Amid Domestic Situation

JERUSALEM (Reuters) – Israel’s professional basketball team, Hapoel Jerusalem, is having a hard time filling its roster, with seven foreign players not joining the team due to concerns over the domestic situation.

Israel’s domestic league began on October 6th, but was postponed the following day after the Islamic group Hamas, which effectively controls the Palestinian autonomous region of Gaza, raided Israel. After that, it became possible to hold games at venues with fewer than 1,000 people, including players, fans and media personnel.

Hapoel will hold their home match in the European Basketball Champions League (BCL) in Belgrade in November. The match was played without spectators.

The Israeli league season is scheduled to resume on the 5th, but in addition to Hapoel’s American players, Serbian coach Aleksandar Žikić also chose not to join the team and chose to remain in Belgrade.
