In an interview with Brazilian media, James Rodriguez spoke about his shortened adventure in Qatar during the 2021-2022 season.

Considered one of the greatest wasted talents of recent years, James Rodriguez is currently playing in the ranks of São Paulo in Brazil. The midfielder who passed through Monaco explained that his failure during his stay in Qatar during the 2021-2022 season was mainly due to a cultural difference that was too important to overcome.

Arriving in September 2021 in the Al-Rayyan SC squad, the Colombian decided to end his contract after only 5 months spent in the Qatari championship. “Life and culture in Qatar is very difficult, it was a country where it was difficult to adapt.» said the 32-year-old in his interview for the media Globe Sports. «There, everyone eats with their hands, which was difficult for me. They wanted to share a meal with me and I said, ‘No thanks.’ I asked for cutlery and they told me: ‘No, with your hand’ and I replied: ‘You are crazy, I won’t eat with my hand’» he added.

All these cultural differences therefore led the former Real Madrid player to end his contract earlier than planned to move to Olympiakos during the season. He ended up signing for São Paulo during the summer of 2023.
