Jets Soar to Victory as Zach Wilson Shines and Defense Dominates Texans in Week 14

Robert Saleh’s trust in Zach Wilson has paid off immediately. The New York Jets (5-8) beat the Houston Texans (7-6) 30-6 in Week 14 of the NFL with two touchdown passes from, once again, the starting QB.

The game began with two ineffective offenses in which the defenses prevailed. The Jets punted on all five of their possessions in the first two quarters and only generated 85 yards. However, Wilson (27/36, 301 yards, 2TDs) responded in the third quarter by generating a seven-play, 75-yard drive that he capped with a touchdown pass with Randall Cobb. On the next play, the New Yorkers only needed eight plays and 69 yards for Xavier Gipson to visit the end zone.

When the Jets had the wind in their sails, the Brigham Young graduate suffered a fumble. Wilson ran and gained ten yards, but C Harris snatched the ball from him. Houston got six points off the turnover through a run by Devin Singletary, but the New York QB recovered in a great way. The second player drafted in the 2021 Draft achieved his second TD pass to increase the difference in connection with Breece Hall.

New York’s impressive defense

New York’s defense has been the highlight of the 2023 season and against Houston it was essential for them to emerge victorious. In the last quarter, they achieved three turnovers on downs in consecutive series. First, CJ Stroud looked for Noah Brown on fourth and two to advance, but the ball ended up on the grass. Demeco Ryans pulled the rookie with a possible concussion and sent David Mills on the field, but the result was the same: three and out with a pass to Brown followed by another loss of downs after a bad throw in search of John Metchie .

From those turnovers, the ‘Gang Green’ got nine points through three field goals by Greg Zuerlein, first one of 51 yards followed by one of 55 and another of 44. The defense shone in such a way that they obtained five sacks, four on Stroud and one about Mills. Additionally, they limited Houston’s offense to just 135 total yards.
