Legendary Malaysian Coach Misbun Sidek Set to Coach Thai Junior Players

PETALING JAYA: Is Datuk Misbun Sidek’s next coaching destination set to be Thailand?

That’s unsure but one thing is certain – the 63-year-old Misbun is back on his feet coaching three Thai junior players at Nusa Mahsuri’s training centre in Ukay Perdana.

He may be decades older than his charges but the legend has been actively sparring with Nuttanon Maku, Punnatat Prempunpong and Tonkid Saeheng as part of their early preparation for the Youth Olympic Games in Senegal in 2026.

The Badminton Association of Thailand (BAT) have asked Misbun’s help to train the boys for one month.

And Misbun’s personal manager Nor Kamal Ahmad sees it as a positive sign.

“When Misbun is back on the court, it means, he is ready to restart his coaching career,” said Kamal.

“For now, he is entertaining many short-term requests from different countries to train their players. He has taken up the offer to train the Thai juniors first and started coaching them four days ago here.

“We have provided them with accommodation. And as usual, he starts the training session with the boys from 4.30am.

“He is not the type who stands at the side and gives instructions. He is literally on the court, sparring with the boys. That’s how active and passionate he is at this age.”

Misbun has been on a break since leaving the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) as the national junior coaching director four months ago in August.

Kamal said Misbun has received many offers but will announce his destination soon.

“I can’t confirm whether it’s Thailand but Misbun is expected to make an announcement soon. He is still weighing options and making sure the offer is good to allow him to work without any interference,” said Kamal.

“But I believe Misbun will make an announcement soon in the new year.”

Whether it’s Thailand or other Asian or European country, Misbun’s wealth of experience and love for the game will surely benefit his players.
