According to what was announced in the last few hours by “Time” magazine, Lionel Messi has been named the athlete of the year for 2023. The Argentine striker thus obtains an important recognition by becoming the first male footballer to win this award. Established in 2019, in fact, the title had previously been won by the US women’s national football team, World Champion on the occasion of its first assignment, by the NBA star LeBron James in 2020, by the Olympic gymnastics champion Simone Biles in 2021 and by baseball player Aaron Judge in 2022.
Accustomed to breaking every record, Messi is not only the first male player to be awarded this award, but also the first foreigner. In announcing this appointment, the Argentine was defined by “Time” as «the greatest living footballer, probably the best to ever play the most popular game in the world, which last year led Argentina to its first World Cup victory in almost four decades.”
