Antananarivo, December 26, 11:35 a.m. – A year 2023 that can be described as historic for Laura Rasoanaivo. The Malagasy judokate had an exceptional season, winning her distance fight against the best young people in her category, and leaving her mark on Africa. She finished the year at the top of the world rankings for juniors under 70 kg, and won at least 10 gold medals in the 18 competitions in which she participated.
It all started in March. Laura Rasoanaivo enters the top three of the world rankings after a double coronation in Tunisia with the African Open and the African Junior Cup, as well as the gold medal of the African Junior Cup in Algiers and the bronze in the African Open.
It was in April that the young Malagasy fighter became world number one after two other gold medals in Luanda, Angola. A first place that she had to leave to her competitor at the time, the German Samira Bock in May.
She didn’t have to wait long to reclaim the throne. In August, after having scored points and victories, Laura Rasoanaivo once again became world number one in the junior under 70kg category. She won two gold medals in Niamey, Niger, another at the African Junior Championships, and another at the Francophonie Games. During the Island Games in Antananarivo, she also won two gold charms as an individual and as a team. She added another gold medal to her purse during the senior African championships.
This first place which she regains in September, she will hold until the end of the year. In the senior category, Laura Rasoanaivo also improves her ranking. She went from 58th in the world in May to 40th with 1,162 points at the end of the year. She is second in Africa behind Tunisian Nihel Landosli who is credited with 1,190 points.
For 2024, Laura Rasoanaivo’s main objective remains the Paris Olympic Games. She is well placed for the continental quota with 1057 points.
