Higher powers? Lourence Ilagan (left) sent thanks up against Matt Campbell

Matt Campbell was almost unassailable ahead of Lourence Ilagan. The Canadian led with 2-0 sets and had the arrow to victory in his hand with a lead of more than 200 points. But then he missed five match darts in a row, while the Filipino suddenly performed spectacularly.
The big surprises are still a long time coming in London. The favorites also won in the fourth session of the Darts World Cup. Joe Cullen, Ricky Evans and Jim Williams celebrated clear 3-0 successes, Williams didn’t even give up a leg in his first round win against Norman Madhoo from Guyana.
Matt Campbell was also 3-0 in his opener against Lourence Ilagan. The Canadian had won the first two sets against the number one from the Philippines 3-1 and was ready to checkout in the decider of the third set with a lead of more than 200 points. What else was supposed to happen?

However, Campbell, who had never reached the second round of the World Cup, got the jitters in the face of victory and missed five match darts in a row. Ilagan, on the other hand, checked 100 points spectacularly via tops-tops to make it 1:2 after sets – and suddenly had the momentum on his side in the game that had already been thought lost.

The Filipino started the fourth round with a 153 finish, stayed on the trigger and provided the next highlight with a 104 checkout in the decider of the fourth round, while Campbell was ready at 48 points, but now actually still had to go into the decisive fifth set .

It is all the more remarkable that the “Ginja Ninja” kept his calm and put his euphoric opponent in his place. Campbell will face James Wade in his first second-round match on Tuesday afternoon, Jim Williams will test Peter Wright’s form on Wednesday evening, and if Ricky Evans has his way, fans at Alexandra Palace will be in for at least one surprise before the Christmas break. For the last match on December 23rd against Nathan Aspinall, Evans announced “something big”.
