Following the Mexican national coach, Mexican football legend Hugo Sánchez also says that it is best for his compatriot Santiago Giménez to leave Feyenoord. The former Real Madrid player would prefer to see the Eredivisie top scorer go to Spain.

“Santiago has the qualities to succeed at the top,” Sánchez said in conversation with ESPN. “If I were him, I would transfer to a really big club as soon as possible. If a big club comes for him this winter, I would certainly do that. It would be nice if Gíménez goes to Spain.”

The 65-year-old Sánchez played for Real Madrid from 1985 to 1992 and previously played for Atlético Madrid. He is considered one of the best Mexican football players of all time.

With his advice, Sánchez follows Mexican national coach Jaime Lozano, who said last month that Gíménez is ready for a higher level and should therefore leave the Netherlands. “The Eredivisie is a good level, but Santiago has proven that he can handle a higher level,” Lozano said.

Gímenez was acquired by Feyenoord from Cruz Azul for six million euros in the summer of 2022. In his first season he scored fifteen times for the Rotterdam club and this season he has scored much more often.

The Mexican scored eighteen goals in the first fifteen games of this Eredivisie season and scored two goals in the Champions League. His contract at De Kuip runs until mid-2027.
