NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in hospital after falling and breaking his hip at a concert

Abdul-Jabbar, 76, was scheduled to undergo surgery on Saturday, Deborah Morales told CNN. The former Los Angeles Lakers star was attending a concert Friday night when he fell, Morales said.

“We are all very grateful for the support that has been given to Kareem, especially from the Los Angeles Fire Department, who helped Kareem on scene, and from the great medical team and doctors at UCLA Hospital who are now providing outstanding care Kareem,” Morales said.

The statement did not say which concert Abdul-Jabbar was attending when he was injured.

The 76 year oldAbdul-Jabbar began his NBA career with the Milwaukee Bucks in 1969, but is best remembered as a key player for the Los Angeles Lakers during their dominant “Showtime” era in the 1980s. He led Los Angeles to five NBA championships.

Abdul-Jabbar, a 5-foot-10, glasses-wearing center, held it NBA Record in Scoring, until he was surpassed by LeBron James in February. Abdul-Jabbar, a six-time NBA MVP, held that record for 39 years.
