NFL’s 8th Annual ‘My Cause My Cleats’ Initiative: Latinos Who Participated and Standout Performances in Week 14

First I will tell you about the great initiative that the NFL carried out in the past two weeks. It is the eighth year it has been celebrated.

In Weeks 13 and 14, players across the league wore custom cleats in honor of the causes they chose to support through “My Cause My Cleats.”

These are the Latinos who participated in the initiative, according to the official NFL roster:

Latin Star of Week 14: Fred Warner (SF)

As in Weeks 1 and 11, Fred Warner of the San Francisco 49ers (10-3) is the most outstanding Latino of Week 14, for his work in the Niners’ victory over the Seattle Seahawks (6-7), 28-16, on Sunday, and for becoming the first player in franchise history with six consecutive 100-tackle seasons.

Warner intercepted a pass from the quarterback Drew Lock in the fourth quarter to seal the victory at Levi’s Stadium. The star with Mexican and Panamanian roots entered the history books with his fourth interception of the year, the most in a season by a non-defensive back in team history. He joined linebackers Jim Fahnhorst (1986), Keena Turner (1984) and Frank Nunley (1974), who also accomplished the feat with the 49ers.

Warner stole the pass intended for DK Metcalf and made a lateral pass at the Seattle 13-yard line to Dre Greenlaw, who carried the ball 16 yards. Then Metcalf gave him a dangerous suplex although Warner no longer had the ball; That tackle led to an unnecessary roughness penalty, but perhaps Warner hadn’t seen the penalty handkerchief when he stood up and shoved Metcalf behind the helmet.

That angered Metcalf, who aggressively grabbed Warner’s mask and shoved him. Warner stretched out his arms to show that he was not retaliating. Metcalf was ejected for shoving Warner, and so was the 49ers cornerback, Deommodore Lenoirfor his role in the ensuing brawl.

Also in the game, he recorded one pass defended, 8 total tackles (4 solo), and 4 assists, while participating in 100% of San Francisco’s defensive snaps (59).

Warner helped the 49ers become the first NFC team to punch their way to the playoffs.

Whoa, Fred!

How Latinos played in Week 14 of the NFL

Someone who deserves a special mention for his performance this week is Chris Olave.

The Cuban-born wide receiver did not practice on Friday due to illness, but he played on Sunday and was an important part of the New Orleans Saints’ (6-7) victory over the Carolina Panthers (1-12), 28-6.

Olave had 4 receptions for 28 yards and a touchdown, participating in 34 offensive snaps (65%).

Olave was an important part of New Orleans being able to stop its streak of three consecutive losses.

Latinos who did not play in Week 14 of the NFL

The most sensitive foul on the field among Latin players in Week 14 was Isiah Pacheco of the Kansas City Chiefs (8-5).

The Puerto Rican did not practice all of last week due to a shoulder injury, and the Chiefs listed him as inactive for the game on their final injury report for the week. That left a place open for Clyde Edwards-Helaire. The Chiefs had not been without Pacheco as their primary running back since he took over for Edwards-Helaire last year, his rookie season.

Well, at the end of the day, Edwards-Helaire didn’t perform against the Buffalo Bills (7-6) on Sunday, recording just 11 carries for 39 yards in a tight 20-17 loss at home.

The runner who did comply, although with few carries, was Jerick McKinnon, who had missed the last two games with a groin injury. McKinnon only had 4 carries for 19 yards, but scored one of Kansas City’s two touchdowns; the other was scored by the wide receiver Rashee Rice.

And do you remember the expulsion of ‘Pop’ for punching Keisean Nixon at the end of the game against the Green Bay Packers in Week 13? Well, the league fined Pacheco $4,943 for the unnecessary roughness, revealed Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. The good news is that — according to a source from Charles Goldman of A-to-Z Sports Kansas City — the runner will not be suspended for the foul and will be able to return to action directly after he recovers from his shoulder injury. Well, unless he goes on injured reserve, about which coach Andy Reid said on Dec. 8, “We’ll see.”

Maybe they don’t want what happened last year when Pacheco apparently played much of the previous season with a torn labrum. He later suffered a hand injury during the AFC Championship Game. He had surgery on his shoulder – which he has now suffered from – and his hand in the offseason. Better to preserve the long-term health of one of his best talents. We’ll see how his shoulder evolves.

Welcome to our list of Latinos in the NFL guard Chandler Zavala of the Carolina Panthers, son of famous chef Demetrio Zavala. The rookie with Cuban roots went on injured reserve on November 26, when he injured his knee in a game against the Tennessee Titans.

Also, happy birthday to Houston Texans fullback Troy Hairston II, who turns 25 this week! The player of Panamanian descent was placed on injured reserve before the season with a herniated disc in his back.
